P. Viraj Vishwakantha Jayaweera received the B.S. degree (Physics Special) from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, in 1999, later worked as a research assistant at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) and significantly contributes to the development of dye-sensitized solar cells. In 2003 he moved to the US and received the MSc. and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia State University, Atlanta, in 2007 and 2009 respectively (click here to download the thesis). Dr. Jayaweera was the recipient of the Joseph H Hadley Outstanding Advanced Graduate Student Award in 2007 presented by the Department of Physics, Georgia State University. His research interests include photon detection techniques, development of low-cost photovoltaic cells, and design automated instruments including mechanical, hardware, firmware, and software. He has authored or co-authored 43 technical papers in refereed journals, a book, 15 conference abstracts, and has three patents (or applications) to his credit.
Currently, he is working as a principal scientist at SPD Laboratory, Inc., Hamamatsu, Japan. He has designed and builds series of automated machines for thin-film formation and the dye-sensitized solar cell production process and those machines are now operating at several famous research laboratories in the USA, Germany, Japan, Australia, India, South Korea, and China. He has recently built a series of PV Power Analyzers to characterize the solar cells with the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) function. This is the world's first PV Power Analyzer with a pico-watt range MPPT function. These power analyzers are already operating in the University of Tokyo, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Japan, University of Bordeaux France, RICHO Japan Co., Ltd, Toyota Technological Institute Japan, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, India, and National Institute of Fundamental Studies Sri Lanka.
Specialties: A scientist with experience in mechatronics
More than 20-years of experience in automation, instrumentation, and control system, development of instrument control software.
